ZOE LEWIS

May 10, 2008

Zoë’s press kit is peppered with quotes like…

Part Huck Finn, part Julie Andrews, Provincetown’s Zoë Lewis is a musical enigma.”

“She’s not just a singer songwriter, she’s more like a circus.”

“If John Cleese and Julie Andrews had a love child...she’d be just a bit like Zoë Lewis.”

Her card states, “She’s a band in a body.”

The first time I heard Zoë was at Kerrville’s New Folk competition in 2002. After hearing just 2 songs I was a fan. She was among the winners that year. The following weekend the 6 New Folk winners each did a 20-minute set. Before her set was over I had decided that we needed to book her and Zoë played her first show for Urban Campfires in December 2003. Since then, she has released more CD’s, gotten more endorsements, and won many more fans and accolades. Also, we have seen her perform many times at festivals and conferences and each time we walk away with that, “Dang, she’s good!” feeling.

Zoë comes from Brighton, England where she started studying music at the age of seven. Later, she played keyboards for a Latin jazz band before going solo, playing standards. She has been in the US for over 10 years and spends her summers in Provincetown, Cape Cod performing jazz and folk shows and fishing for flounder, fluke and squid from her boat, Nellie. During the off-season she tours internationally (and in Texas) picking up styles and tunes along the way.

Her music has been described as a combination of New Orleans style jazz, swing, world beat, bouncy folk, piano lounge music, and sweet ballads. Besides piano, she can play ukulele, spoons, chopsticks, various guitars, harmonica, clarinet, tin whistle, and accordion along with an assortment of strange and interesting hand made instruments. “High energy, world beat grooves played on a ton of unusual instruments. Quirky lyrics, a little jazz, a little salsa, a lot of entertainment.”

Cook up a little something for the potluck and bring some friends or your mother - or your friends who are mothers - for what promises to be a fun evening with guitar twanging, ivory tickling, penny whistling, harmonica bending, ukulele crooning Zoë Lewis.
